GHIT Fund Supports First Neglected Tropical Disease Student Contest in Japan

Every year, January 30 is World NTD Day, approved by the World Health Organization (WHO).

In preparation for World NTD Day on January 30, 2024, the NTDs Youth Organization, as a member of the World NTD Day Japan Preparatory Committee, consisting of organizations working on global health and neglected tropical diseases (NTDs) in Japan and abroad, including the Global Health Innovative Technology Fund (GHIT Fund), will hold the “First Neglected Tropical Disease Student Contest.” The GHIT Fund is pleased to support the contest.

The contest is open to students from junior high school through university and graduate school, and aims to raise broad understanding and interest in NTDs among the youth generation, who are highly interested in the Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs)*1.

NTDs are a group of 20 preventable and treatable diseases that affect more than 1.6 billion people worldwide, particularly communities in low-income countries. Despite the need for diagnostics, vaccines and drugs, NTDs are under-researched, under-treated and under-funded.

The GHIT Fund is a global organization that invests in research and development for malaria, tuberculosis, and neglected tropical diseases (NTDs), working with global partners to invest in research and development of treatments, diagnostics, and vaccines for the control of NTDs. However, as the word “neglected” implies, there is still a lack of understanding and interest in tropical diseases, and many people still do not have access to appropriate medical care. We are pleased to sponsor and provide support with this contest.

The contest is divided into two categories: “Disseminating information on NTDs in an easy-to-understand way” and “Considering what you can do about NTDs.” The GHIT Fund will also present a special GHIT Prize, and we encourage you to spread the word about this contest to the younger generation and look forward to receiving many submissions.
